TED is a non-profit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It began in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, and Design. Since then its scope has become even broader. The annual TED Conferences brings together the world's leading thinkers and doers to share ideas that matter in any discipline -- technology, entertainment, design, science, humanities, business, and development. The spirit of the event is focused on the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives, and, ultimately, the world. Their talks are then made freely available at TED.com. In July 2010 alone, their were more than 290 million viewings.
Selected speakers are given 18 minutes to present their ideas in the most innovative and engaging ways they can. Past speakers have included J.J. Abrams, Isabel Allende, Bono, Richard Branson, Sergey Brin, Gordon Brown, Bill Clinton Bill Gates, Elizabeth Gilbert, Jane Goodall, Al Gore, Nandan Nilekani, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Larry Page, Philippe Starck and others.
It now includes two annual conferences, an award-winning TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Project and TED Conversations, the inspiring TED Fellows and TEDx programs, and the annual TED Prize. TED Fellows are part of a fellowship program that brings together young world-changers and trailblazers who have shown unusual accomplishment and exceptional courage.
TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are called TEDx, where the x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance (certain rules and regulations) for the TEDx program, but these individual events are self-organized.
The next TEDxIowaCity event has been postponed until a new TED fellow is located. More information will be added to this Web site as it becomes available.
